Limassol, Cyprus, 11.-17.06.2018, Part I

One of some advantages of a scientist's life is conferences. We were on a few already: in Prague (Nerr), and in Toulouse (Tio). So when next opportunity (via Tio) appeared, we decided to combine a conference for one with vacations for both of us.

Only Shaya had to stay aside - she is not used to flights and we decided to fly without her. We found a hosting family, who would take care of her for ten days and agree to send us every day a photoproof of her wellbeing. Some were hilarious:

So, with Shaya staying in Kaiserslautern, we started our journey to a far island in the Mediterranean Sea in a company of Tio's colleague, Raphael. So, from our porch to the airport and further!

We landed in the airport Larnaca, took a taxi to Limassol, and later visited Paphos on an excursion. A curious fact, see the small outlined area on the south of the island? It is a British Military Base. Yes, because of Turkish occupation of the Eastern part of the island.

Cyprus on photos looks much more colourful than we saw in real life, because the sun was too bright and we were either in sunglasses, that deemed the colours, or we saw everything as it was overexposed. So now we can actually see the picture!

A hotel where Tio's colleague stayed - Navarria. And the view from behind...

There are a lot of Russians on Cyprus. That's why it is easier to find some Russian goods there than actual Cypriotic. So, Russian ice-cream! And some other Russian stuff like a singer-pastor.

Our apartment was good located, huge, not very clean, but for its price it was perfect. We made breakfast in our kitchen and had it outside near the pool.

The World Cup has just started, it was in every pub on every corner... and this one too (made in China, of course =)

The first restaurant, that we visited... was a really bad choice. Despite a horrid service, we enjoyed the sea view)

A nightclub on the shore, very impressive decoration, but the music was unbearably loud.

We tried our best to not forget anything but alas! We totally forgot about hats, so, we had to visit a shop to buy ones. There we are:

 And, eventually, the Sea!

As we expected, there were a lot of cats, they leave their traces everywhere!

A promenade to the Limassol city centre - a green line along the water on the bottom half of the picture. We lived on the outskirts, Germasogeya, it is outside of the map, further to the right along the water.

The Limassol Old Docks:

So sad that we did not try Vaflaki)))

We walked further through the city

And we visited a castle and museum inside it

The sun was blinding! It was almost impossible to use a phone.

We continued the stroll

So funny Greek language... If you know physics, math and Russian you can probably read it...)

Going further

The second restaurant was a perfect choice - a small local place in the downtown.

Our favourite place in the whole Limassol - Dasoudi beach. It has a lot of shadows thanks to trees and it is just nice to lay among the subtropic forest.

Childish fun)

Then we swam to the stones near the shore, they smooth the waves. We took Nerr's smartphone with us to take photos, because it should be waterproofed, and it was the beginning of its end... But anyway, at least we have these photos!

Cat-o-proof:

We went to discover the 5-star hotels' beaches! They are Ok, but nothing outstanding, actually...

Look, who is a real owner of the place?

And then the conference starts: the opening. Two glasses because Nerr was luckily allowed to be there as a guest =)

While Tio had to attend presentations and enjoy coffee breaks and lunches, Nerr was alone enjoying the beach and the sun, no THE SUN, and the sea!

Some other day we visited another museum in Limassol. There was... a lot of pottery.... Mostly boring, but some were just masterpieces!

An orthodox church.

Just some yard decoration...

Almost every evening we spent on our beach

And in different restaurants for dinner. This is a glass of famous Cypriotic wine - Commandaria. It is the most ancient documented wine all over the world! Tasty, actually. Strong, but it is not noticeable until too late..) That's why it served in such a small dosage.

A funny bird near our hotel

It seems to be an oil platform.

A meat-up for young researches. Nerr was not invited this time but came anyway.

And here is the closing of the conference.

Just walking through the city

Look, what we have found!

The last day before the departure we attended an excursion to an archaeological site near Paphos. The next post will be about it, stay tuned!
